only stands to reason that the popularity of OpenLP will continue to
increase. What will 2010 bring to OpenLP world? A release of 2.0? 200
fans on Facebook? 500? perhaps even 1,000 Facebook fans? Whatever
happens it is great to see that OpenLP is gaining in popularity and also
helping Christians all over the world worship Him more effectively.

It is time once again for an OpenLP head count. 1,000 Facebook fans is a
huge sign of the people who use and support OpenLP. While, of course, we
arent exactly getting scientific here, it is great to know that OpenLP
is helping out churches literally all across the world.
The OpenLP Beta 2 release has been out for a while now is working very
well . I know it has been working very well for our church. Further
improvements are scheduled for the next beta release that will be out
soon. As always your input is need, in bug reports, testing, and
spreading the word about OpenLP.
We can also especially use the help of Mac users. The developers and
testers for the most part do not have a great deal of access to Mac
hardware. If you are a Mac user and have time your help would be greatly
appreciated. The hope is that OpenLP will be running on OS X Lion on the
release after the upcoming release (1.9.8). Currently OpenLP does not
run on Lion due to known issues.
Another thing to look forward to in coming releases is improved
multimedia support. I know this has been an issue for many users, me
included. Don't fear help is on the way. It may be a few months before
this is completely resolved but there is a huge effort to get media
support working properly in OpenLP on all platforms for all users.
We are extremly grateful for all those users of OpenLP that have left a
message of thanks and support. I know this is a great uplift to the
developers who are tirelessly working on this project in their spare
time. Also, if you need support there are several options for you. You
can always drop an email to support at openlp.org, or chat at #openlp on
freenode, and you can use the convenient web chat. We are also still
working on documentation for version to so be sure to check it out also.
The community at OpenLP is always growing. If you would like to get
involved in developing, testing, documentation. or support, come join in
today and help us make OpenLP even better.

Well, it would appear as if there are 1 or 2 small (?) issues that I
missed in my testing.  Firstly, it's important to select a monitor in
the First Run Wizard.  Failure to do so will result in an error message,
but the software will still run fine afterwards.
Secondly, in some cases, the Search Button in the Bible Verse Lookup
goes missing.
I plan to make these corrections in the next few days and release an
update. Feel free to try and find as many bugs  as you can in 1.2.0 so
we can make 1.2.1 bug free :D

The milestones for OpenLP keep on coming. Today we reached 200 Facebook
fans! Excitement is building for the release of version 2.0, and version
1 has been receiving some nice improvements over the last few months.
There have also been some comments about users leaving high priced
software and coming to OpenLP. With the economic situation today more
and more churches are turning to OpenLP because of cost. After turning
to OpenLP many are being pleasantly surprised at how well it competes
and in many cases performs better than its high priced alternatives.
With the buzz ever increasing we look forward to the next 100 fans and
enabling more churches to enhance their worship and their ministries.

OpenLP has hit yet another milestone, 350 Facebook Fans. While not
scientific, it appears that OpenLP's popularity is ever increasing as
the developers continue chugging along with version 2. There are
constant improvements being made, feature request being filled, and I
think the developers even find time to sleep and have a life on
occasion.
 
As you can see OpenLP 2 is running very nicely on Ubuntu.
Please be advised that version 2.0 is still in the alpha stage. It will
likely crash and do strange things without warning, so we can use all
the testers that have the time to try things out. If you are interested
in trying out OpenLP 2.0 check out the FAQ . It would not be advised to
depend on version 2.0 for your every day needs just yet.
Please try OpenLP 2.0 out and help us make it the best release possible.

With OpenLP version 2.0 development heading fast to another alpha
release, the popularity of OpenLP seems to also be rising. Granted,
using Facebook as a popularity meter may not be the best way to tell,
but seems pretty good to us. One of the most notable changes that has
happened recently has been major changes to the output display. With the
next release you should see working text over video, text enhancements
(bold text, text colors, etc) and spell checking. I really look forward
to the spell checking because there is something pretty embarrassing
about looking up from the stage on Sunday morning realizing that you
misspelled something.
The songs plug in has also seen some improvements. Alternate song titles
are now working and also the ability to link media files to songs.
Personally I have also been playing around with the remote plug in. It
has a lot of uses but one that I have seen is using it for nursery
workers to flash something on screen when they may need a little
parental help.
OpenLP from a user's standpoint has really come a long way in the last
few months. I came to OpenLP from using a rather expensive “boxed”
software solution and OpenLP is set to absolutely blow it out of the
water for features and not to mention price. Then combine that with the
relatively low system requirements versus the others, and its simply
amazing what OpenLP is set to accomplish.
We can always use testers, especially as OpenLP nears completion. Please
check out the download section of the site to download the latest alpha
release. For more information on 2.0 check out the OpenLP 2.0 specific
section of the forum and always feel free to hangout with many
developers and users in chat on #openlp.org on freenode or check out the
webchat option.

It's difficult to tell just how popular an open source project is, but
with OpenLP's Facebook following growing it seems safe to say that
OpenLP's popularity is also growing. Version 2.0 is really starting to
look like a mature finished product. The recent release of the first
beta has been very positive. We are now suggesting that all new users
start out with 2.0 Beta 1, since support has now officially ended for
the 1.x series and 2.0 has reached a very stable point in its
development.
The OpenLP community is constantly growing and changing. We can always
use an extra hand as OpenLP is a large project. We could especially use
assistance writing the documentation for version 2.0. The developers are
working hard to make sure that OpenLP is not just an alternative to
commercial software but that it is a superior option. Part of being a
superior product is having great documentation and support. If you are
like me and not a programmer but would like to help out, maybe assisting
with documentation is a place you can help out. If documentation is not
for you, but you are good at helping others we can always use help
answering questions in the forums or providing support in IRC.
Since I am someone whose church has been blessed by the developers of
OpenLP I would like to also take a moment to thank them for their hard
work and dedication. It is rare, even in the Christian world, for a
group of people to set out to do something with no hope of physical or
monetary reward. The developers of OpenLP truly are doing this by making
this product available to all and asking nothing in return.  As we enter
the Easter season may we all be more like this and ultimately learn from
Christ selflessness as he gave himself for us who did not deserve it.

At last, after five hours of labour, the new mother was resting with her
newborn son gently nursing while her husband was taking care of the last
few things after the birth. It hadn't been an easy day and she was glad
that it was over.
After a number of days' travel, they had reached their destination, the
so-called "City of David." However, even after the journey was over,
they struggled to find accommodation. Eventually, an old innkepper,
seeing a heavily pregnant woman, had pity on them and offered them the
only place he had left open, his stables. And it wasn't over yet, just
as they settled down, Mary's labour started. Now everything was over,
and they could finally rest.
Joseph put the last of the cloths in the bucket of washing water, and
walked over to his wife. Despite the hour and the preceding labour, her
face was glowing, and she was happy. He looked down at the boy in his
wife's arms, and thought back to the miracle of how the Lord had made
his wife pregnant, despite her being a virgin.
While this boy was not technically his, Joseph already regarded the baby
as his own. One day, this little Jesus would save the world, but until
then, he needed a father here on earth.
And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. And
she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling

Hi Folks,
I was in a local Christian bookstore yesterday, and I suddenly thought,
"What if, for the release of openlp.org 1.0, we make a distribution kit
for people to distribute openlp.org to churches and to Christian
bookstores?"
My idea is basically this: we create a professional distribution kit for
people to download, burn to CD, and then hand out to churches, Christian
bookstores, and other places.
The distribution kit would contain the following:
A CD ISO image containing the following:
- A nice autostart screen that opens when the CD is inserted into the
drive, with a menu to get started.
- A full manual, including a "Getting Started" guide, in several
formats.
- The openlp.org 1.0 installation application, of course.
A professional-looking CD label for people to print and stick on the CD.
A professional-looking CD cover for CD cases containing the CD.
A big poster.
A smaller poster of sorts.
A brochure that could be handed out as well.
If you can think of anything else to add, let me know!
Of course, to do all of that we'll need a few things:
- Graphic designer(s) to design the CD label, CD cover, posters,
brochure and autostart screen.
- Some technical writers to write the documentation.
- LOTS of people to distribute openlp.org to their local Christian
bookstores, churches, and other places.

baby, born to a poor carpenter and his young wife, would fulfill all the
prophecies of countless generations and prophets. The nation had been
waiting for this moment for more than 600 years.
As the angel choir withdrew into heaven, the sheepherders talked it
over. "Let's get over to Bethlehem as fast as we can and see for
ourselves what God has revealed to us." They left, running, and
found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. Seeing was
believing. They told everyone they met what the angels had said
about this child. All who heard the sheepherders were impressed.

As you may or may not know, my primary desktop system runs Kubuntu
Linux. I do this because Linux is far more stable, it's virus-free, it
has far superior security, and in general is more user friendly. It's
also updated frequently (every 6 months in the case of Kubuntu), any
security flaws that are found are patched immediately (including my
system downloading and installing those patches), and it's 100% free to
boot. As such, I like to promote Linux as an alternative to Windows.
Recently I came across a "rant" - a person venting their frustration -
on a Dutch chap's site. It is unlike a normal rant because not only is
the length of a dissertation, but it's also well thought out and well
written. Most rants are irrantional, illogical and full of insults; this
rant was the complete opposite. And what was the rant about? It was
about Microsoft.
I urge you to read this document. You can find it at:
http://www.vanwensveen.nl/rants/microsoft/IhateMS.html. It's a very
honest and factual essay on Microsoft. As you read it, I encourage you
to think about what a Christian response to Microsoft would be. Should
we as Christians actually be using their software? Should we be
endorsing a company like that through using their software?
It says in Philippians 4:8-9: "8Finally, brothers, whatever is true,
whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or
praiseworthy—think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or
received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the
God of peace will be with you. "
My question is this: Is Microsoft a company you want to associate with
as a Christian, as a member of the Church? Are they "true, noble, right,
pure lovely or admirable"?
| I would recommend that you show print out this document and show it to
your pastors and those involved in the leadership of your church. Ask
them to think about what I've said.

Also, I didn't have the time I thought I would have, since my fiancée
arrived on Thursday and so I was otherwise occupied. So yes, as if to
confirm what I already knew, a woman can take up a lot of a man's time -

hi folks...
well, for those of you who maybe actually read my blog, here is what is
currently happening...
well, firstly, i'm working on a freelance basis until the end of the
month. then i start this job that i was supposed to start in feb of this
year. thanks to this company that stuffed me around a bit, my fincances
are VERY thin. i'm barely making it financially and any prayer is very
much appreciated.
secondly, i'm very busy otherwise, due to church commitments mainly, and
then this freelance work (as any freelancer knows, you're \*always\*
working - well, except for sundays). so i have't had much chance to look
at openlp.org.
however, i have had a bit of a look at it, and there are a few things in
the pipeline at the moment.
there's a fairly major "bug". there's a couple of SQL statements which
makes large databases with many authors take \*FOREVER\* to load, thus
making the program appear to hang when it is started. i'm trying to
figure out one query that will do all the work, and quickly, but i never
wrote the majority of the code in openlp.org 1.0 and on top of that i
have never used sqlite before. so i'm wading through these things, but
i'm getting there.
also, one of the features that has been frequently requested since the
0.9x days is multilingual support. this actually looks to be \*fairly\*
trivial to implement, so i'm busy with that too at the moment. so
hopefully i'll have beta4 out soon with multilingual support in it!
other than that, i don't have much to say...

I've busy with a few things marketing-related for openlp.org lately,
including creating a flyer for people to print out and hand out, or put
in local Christian bookstores (with their permission, of course).
This flyer is done in Scribus 1.3.3.9, and the page size is A4. In South
Africa our standard paper size is A4. I don't have any Letter size
paper, so I can't test that flyer out. I've attached both a PDF and the
original Scribus file to this post so that you can download it and print
it out, and if you have an alternate paper size, you can edit it to fit
your paper size.
If you do print it out from the PDF, make sure that it disregards the
printer margins when you print it out. I've sized it on the page so that
it fits well inside the physical bounds of the pieceof paper. It's 3
columns, so that you have 3 flyers per sheet of paper. Don't forget to
flip the paper over and print the second page on the back!

Over the last few weeks the alerts framework has been extended, adding
new requested features.
These features include.
- The ability to change the alert Font size.  The Background will
resize to fit.
- The ability to place the alerts at the Top or Bottom of the screen
- The ability to store all alerts issued.
- The ability to add / amend / delete from the alerts history.
- The ability to select and resubmit an existing alert.  This does not
re-save it unless the text has been changed.

This morning we are pleased to announce the release of OpenLP 2.0 Alpha
2!
Please remember to read through the Frequently Asked Questions before
using OpenLP - it answers many questions you might have about the new
version. The download page will be updated later today.
This release brings a number of improvements and bug fixes since release
1 as well as a lot on new features.  Since Alpha 1 there have been two
major changes which will effect those upgrading.
- Alpha 1 Saved Service files are not compatible with the new version
- All configuration settings will have been lost and will need to be
set up agan. Themes are not effected by this.
New Features since Alpha 1
- Web Interface to allow remote access.
- Basic Song book imports have been developed and will be improved in
later releases,  (Requires OpenOffice)
- Many UI changes and improvements.
- Themes now can control their line spacing.
- UI is now translatable, thanks to the hard work from Christian
Richter, Meinert Jordan and Frode Woldsund.

Following hot on the heels of the 1.9.10 release the next version of the
Android client has escaped.
This client version works best with 1.9.10 but will also work (with
restricted functionality) with other versions.
The new features added since 0.4 are:
- Changes to the panels to allow them to be swiped left and right
instead of only being accessed via the menu. This should improve  the
usability of the application.
- Provide the ability to poll the main application for updates. This
will allow two users to work together. In the settings there is a
"Refresh Displays" setting which allows the refresh time to be set.
The default is 5 seconds and a refresh time of 0 seconds turns this
feature off.
- Following requests from a number of users it is now possible to have
Server profiles for different locations. These are accessed again via
the settings panel.
- To aid usability, the displayed verse is now highlighted on the live
tab so it is obvious which slide is selected.

The OpenLP team has always supported older versions of Ubuntu, even when
they were no longer supported by Canonical. Unfortunately this places a
strain on the team and on which tools we can use to continue developing
OpenLP. For this reason we have decided to only support versions of
Ubuntu that Canonical themselves support.
Recently Canonical announced that they would be ending support for
Ubuntu 10.04 and 11.10 at the end of April. This means that only
versions of Ubuntu 12.04 and higher are supported by Canonical. OpenLP
therefore will only be supporting releases on Ubuntu 12.04 and higher as
of immediately. This also means that the upcoming 2.0.2 bugfix release
of OpenLP will only be available on Ubuntu 12.04 and higher.
Since 12.04 is the latest Long Term Support release of Ubuntu, we are
hoping that this should not affect anyone. If you are affected, and
there is some reason why you cannot upgrade to a later version of

phase! Release candidate phase means that we will not be adding any more
features and will be concentrating on fixing bugs.

been included in version 2.0, and for the next few months we will be
focusing our efforts on fixing as many outstanding bugs as we can.
Features added:
- Transparent themes, for background videos (theme video backgrounds
not yet possible)
- On-the-fly changing of backing tracks
- Repeating of backing track list
- Use `VLC for displaying
videos <http://manual.openlp.org/configure.html?highlight=vlc#available-media-players>`__
- not on Mac OS X yet, unfortunately. (Note: To be able to use this
feature the `VLC media player <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/>`__ has
to be installed on your computer.)
- Search songs by song book/number
- Configurable `automatic service file
names <http://manual.openlp.org/configure.html#default-service-name>`__
using the date
- The reference format used to look up Bible verses has been localised,
and can be changed along with the interface language
- Configure the "next slide" action when at the end of the current item
in the slide controller to either move to the first slide again, to
the next slide of the next item, or nothing.
Of course we have also fixed over 46 bugs in this release!

We're pleased to (finally) announce the latest bugfix release of OpenLP
2.0, version 2.0.2 (codename Debugged Deborah). In this release we have
made over 30 tweaks, improvements and bug fixes all over OpenLP, but the
areas that have seen the most work are the user interface and the song
importers. This wouldn't have been possible without all the feedback and
error reports we have recieved from you guys. They really do help!
Some of the bugs fixed in this release:
- OpenLP does not start due to mimetypes bug
- Theme in Song Editor is never reset
- We should not warn when verse order is empty
- Inconvenient focus in Song Editor when adding authors
- Macro enabled presentations are not shown in OpenLP
- Images always get black background when loaded from saved service

- "Display verses on live tool bar" ignored
- Typing a path for a theme background causes a key error

In the screenshot above, you can see how we've started working on
Themes, Previews, and the Slide Controllers. I searched for Genesis 1:1
in the Bible Verse plugin, and then sent it to the preview controller.
We're currently working on the Service Manager (what used to be called
the Order of Service) to make it a little more powerful that the
previous one, and on getting things displayed on the second monitor. We
already have some initial bits to both of those working, but neither is
complete yet.

howdy folks...
i just want to apologise for the silence. i've been extremely busy, and
then suddenly, after i thought, "yay! i have a nice job, a steady
income!" our boss's contract was terminated, and that meant that we were
out of work (we were subcontracted). so now i sit again without work,
looking at the freelancing scene, wondering if i can make it... there
seems to be a bit of work at the moment, but i'm not sure...
and this other freelance work that i have been doing has been keeping me
up late nights and things... let me tell you, working 20 hours days is
not funny :-(.
well, i hope that now with a little more time on my hands i can perhaps
get some more done on openlp.org...

This weekend we were able to set up the necessary infrastructure for
doing test builds for Mac OS X automatically.
Nightly builds are created every day around 10pm GMT. These builds are
created on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) and should also work on Mac OS X 10.6
(Snow Leopard). These builds include latest development changes in
OpenLP. The latest test build is available on the download page.
I would like to encourage Mac OS X users and testers to test OpenLP
builds and report bugs periodically since we do not have a lot of Mac OS
X developers and the support for Mac platform is not perfect.

openlp.org Beta 5 on Friday. it's not going to have all the features and
bug fixes we'd hoped for, but it should have the majority of
show-stopper bugs patched. We've fixed a number of things in the CCLI
SongSelect and also in the Video part. We've decided to postpone the
localisation, since that's gonna take a little longer than expected, and
I haven't had the time to work on it until recently.
Also, like I've said before, we have done a feature-freeze. This is
because if we DON'T we'll NEVER release version 1.0.

Howzit Folks,
Beta 6 is almost upon us. I'm just trying to find some time to finish
off the last few things. Some of the bugs from beta 5 are gonna be
carried over to beta 6, because we haven't been able to solve them yet.
There are also a few more new features.
Our next release is RC1 - the first release candidate. We're hoping to
resolve the remaining bugs, and any new ones from beta 6 from now on.
Please note that this also means that there will be **no more new
features**. We have made our feature freeze final, and any new features
will be added in version 1.1, the development version of 1.2, which will
be commenced once we have released 1.0 final.
I'm really excited to be bringing  out our first ever proper version of
openlp.org, version 1.0. Thanks for sticking with us, and bearing with
us on this long road to 1.0!

Well, we're still working on beta 6. It's **almost** there... I
implemented the internationalization, but to my dismay it's not working.
I'm going to look into it further to see if I can work out what's wrong.
So hopefully, if I can figure that out soon, we can have beta 6 out by
the end of this week, next week the latest.
Thanks also to a post in the forums, we think we might have solved the
CCLI SongSelect login problem. We're gonna also be looking at fixing
that this week. Derek has also managed to pick up another 2 bugs and has
fixed one of them in the mean time.
Like I think I mentioned in my previous blog post, we're going to RC1
next release, so that's gonna call for intense testing. So get your
testing gear out, and pile into beta 6 and RC1 when they are released.

Well, thanks to Derek's sharp eyes, we've managed to weed out a few more
bugs, and now all that remains is some minor testing from us to make
sure there are no show-stopper bugs, and then on Sat (12 May) I will
release beta 6.
Please note that we have not yet managed to fix the CCLI SongSelect
problem. That was a hack at best, and now CCLI have changed their
authentication method on the SongSelect, which means that we can no
longer log in. We're gonna have a look at that "bug" in the release
candidates, but Derek and I are leaning toward just leaving it broken
until the next version of openlp.org. Then we'll have a look at it
again.

Some improvements have been added to build 1496 to change the way songs
and custom slides are paged. A new feature has been added to allow a
song verse to be split *IF* it does not all fit on one slide.
If a line contains **[---]** then, if the slide does not fit on a single
display, that is where the slide will automatically be split. This means
that songs can be set up for different size themes with complete control
over the paging. In addition the need for two slides containing "V1" etc
has been removed. One slide one verse and the display code will split
things correctly.
For custom slides a minor change has been implemented. **[===]** is now
the slide break if you use "Edit All" and **[---]** is the soft break.
**This does not effect any saved custom items you have created.**
The interfaces will be updated before beta2 to help with adding this
tag.

When we released openlp.org 1.0, we hinted at a bugfix release soon
after, to clear up any bugs that were still in that release, and true to
our word, we've been working on openlp.org 1.0.1. We got our testing
team to mercilessly attempt to break openlp.org in a bid to find as many
bugs as possible. And we got them...
After a few rounds of test -> fix -> test -> fix, I think we're almost
done, and I'm hoping to release openlp.org 1.0.1 in about 2 weeks time.
After 1.0.1 we're going full steam ahead on version 1.1, the development
version of 1.2. As we go along, we'll have a few releases (1.1.0, 1.1.1,
1.1.2, etc) so that those who want to run a bleeding edge version of
openlp.org can. For the rest of you who prefer stability and
reliability, we would suggest you stick with 1.0.1 until 1.2 itself
comes out.
We've also had offers from another 2 folks to help us out with 1.1, and
so we're looking forward to a slightly faster development pace, although
we can't make any promises.
That's all from us for the moment. In the mean time, click on the
Ohloh.net button at the bottom of the left hand column of the site, and
let the world know that you use openlp.org by signing up and "stacking"
openlp.org!

Well, with OpenLP 2.0, we'd like to be more open, and that includes
translations. If you speak a language other than English, and you want
to help translate OpenLP 2.0 into your language, please take a look at
the Translations section of the developer wiki.
**Note:** We're still in the process of setting up the translation
tools, but we will feature an online tool, so you don't need to install
anything on your computer, nor do you need to be able to do anything
terribly technical.

doesn't install the packaged themes properly on Windows ME, and then on
exiting throws some nasty errors.
If some of you kind people could verify whether this occurs on your
Windows ME installation we would really appreciate the input. Whether
you experience the bug or not, please include some info about your
system in the mail to us, such as version of MsOffice installed or any
other possibly relevent info.

The conflict merge went well last week, and I have a working copy of
openlp.org again. I've started the code cleanup, renaming various
components in the code, formatting the code to follow a certain standard
(rather than 3 different ones), and rearranging a few things as well in
the process. The goal behind the code cleanup is to make it easier and
faster to work on openlp.org, and to make openlp.org more efficient.
What this all translates to at the end of the day is that you as the
user will find openlp.org faster and more efficient, and when we need to
make a change or an enhancement, it'll be faster too.
Once I've completed the code cleanup, I'm going to continue with my
rewrite of the control component, which will enable us to do things like
use the up and down cursor keys to change between slides.
On that note, I know a number of folks have asked me for the components
so that they can make changes to openlp.org (I presume it's because
development is not happening fast enough for them, and they want certain
features for their church). Please chat with me and consider lending a
helping hand with the development. If you want feature A, I'm sure that
there are a number of other churches who also want feature A, and it
would be beneficial to them if you contributed that back to the project.
There are also a number of things you can and can't do with the current
codebase, and unless you chat with me and ask, you won't know and you'll
struggle unnecessarily (for instance, using the up and down cursor key
will only be possible after a rewrite of the control component).
In short, if you contribute back to openlp.org, not only do you benefit,
but others will too. You won't need to make changes to your version each
time a new version of openlp.org comes out, development will happen
faster, and others will benefit from your changes as well.

So, we've been developing openlp.org for a few years now, but to be
honest, I've never looked at the commercial offerings. I know about
them, and I know that most people seem to hear of them first, but I've
never actually installed them and tried them out.
So last night I installed 4 applications:
- EasyWorship
- SongShow Plus
- SongPro
- Sunday Plus
I basically just installed everything, and then opened each program and
tried to figure out how to use it without looking in a manual.
Installation
Apart from SongShow Plus, the applications installed in apretty straight
forward manner. SongShow Plus, however, was a nightmare. It has a whole
bunch of "components" which you can choose to install, only each and
every component is an installer in and of itself. This means, that with
a default install (pre-selected components), you install 26 components,
and you have to click buttons on each installer a minimum of 3 times...
that's a minimum of 78 clicks! It took about 15 minutes to install
SongShow Plus, thanks to all their installers. I was not impressed with
SongShow Plus after that.
First Impressions EasyWorship
If you wanted to say that openlp.org copied someone's interface, it
would be EasyWorship's. Of all the applications, EasyWorship's interface
is the most like openlp.org's. For me it was simple and easy to see what
to do and how to do it. EasyWorship is also written in Delphi, like
openlp.org, but it uses the archaic Borland Database Engine.
SongShow Plus
SongShow Plus has a very flashy interface, with a silver look and little
effects here and there. However, as my wife pointed out, all the icons
look the same. It's interface is somewhat similar to openlp.org and
EasyWorship, but not quite as intuitive.
SongPro
Eyesore. That was my first impression of SongPro. It doesn't look good.
The backgrounds of the text boxes are turquoise or yelow, and I couldn't
initially figure out how to put together an order of service. The
buttons are all too big, there's too much whitespace around certain
elements, and it really looks like it was hastily put together with no
regard for how it looks.
Sunday Plus
Bizarre, just plain bizarre. When you open Sunday Plus, it shows you  a
small window in the middle of your screen that looks more like a
calculator than anything else. From there I was absolutely baffled as to
what to do. How do you set up an order of service? How do you
add/edit/delete songs? I couldn't figure out how to use Sunday Plus
after 5 minutes, so I just decided to leave it.
Some Thoughts
Features are not king. If you application doesn't look good, and isn't
easy enough to figure out how to use, then people will not be impressed
with it. From what I've read in forums on the Internet, a lot of people
like EasyWorship because of it's smart, not too simple but not too
complicated, and easy to use interface.
I think it's important to have a decent set of features, but it's more
important that your interface looks good (but not flashy) and that your
program is easy to use, without having to read the manual.

Work on the 2.0 version is moving forward at great speed with new
developers helping out.
In the last few weeks code has been added to run Impress presentations
on Linux. Work is underway to get this to also work on Windows.
Powerpoint and PowerPoint Viewer will come later.
In the latest merge a new Audit plugin has arrived to audit songs used
during a service. This will record what was actually used during a
service. More work is needed on this component but the foundations are
complete.
The other month an extension to the alerting component was added allow
alerts to be triggered over a network.  This will be useful for creche's
and car park attendants

Well, as you have probably already read in one of Raoul's recent blog's,
we are planning a big launch for the V1.0 release of OpenLP.org.  With
that in mind, we have decided to add a few of the smaller but more
useful features from the feature request list.  This comes with the
price of a slightly delayed V1.0, and possibly a few more Release
Candidate versions.  Our feeling though was that there really were some
area's that needed enhancing prior to a major distribution release. You
can look forward to the following enhancements coming in the next few
release candidates:
| - Enhanced Bible Verse handing where you can display multiple verses
on one slide
| - Some keyboard navigation (actually I think it's in RC2 already)
| - Enhanced slide auto-scrolling
| - Import/Export of themes
| - Storage of theme data exclusively in the 'theme' directory in XML
format
| There may be 1 or 2 other things, but these are the main ones as we
didn't want to impact our timeline too much.

As you know by now, we have frozen the featureset for the current
version of OpenLP.org which we are trying hard to get into a v1 release
as soon as possible.  There have been some great idea's from you guys,
and we are keeping them all on record for after the v1 release.  We are
even putting some of our own idea's on the back burner for now.
So...what's next. Well, there are 4 main issues on the table for the
next, and hopefully last, beta release (beta5). These are:
| 1) The translation feature
| 2) Fixing the CCLI SongSelect
| 3) Putting back the song theme assignment
| 4) Getting the video working
With regard to the Video feature, there is a possible workaround which I
am using successfully at the moment.  If you have a relatively recent
nVidia display card, there is a setting for "Full screen video".  If you
set the "Full screen device" to "auto-select", the card automatically
routes the video to the second display.  I had this setting unknowingly
set on my development machine and couldn't figure out why video wasn't
working on other machines.  Anyway, you can try this workaround and see
if it works for you.
I'm sure you are all eager to know when to expect the next beta.  Raoul
and I have had a chat and we are planning it for early in the New Year. 
I know that sounds a bit vague, but the translation feature is an
immense amount of work and the video is a bit tricky since we are not
DirectX experts.
Well, that's how things stand at the moment.  We appreciate all the

I'm sad to say those have all fallen through. However, someone has
contacted me, and he seems VERY keen to help out with the documentation.
One of the things I have been wanting to do is to extract the
documentation from the site, and be able to work on it "offline" as it
were. To this end, I extracted the documentation in XML format, and I'm
writing a little editor that will be able to parse the XML and allow you
to edit the pages of the documentation using a WYSIWYG HTML editor
(currently it can do all of that, it just can't save).
So, if you're still interested in helping out with the documentation,
you think you can spare an hour a week perhaps, then please contact me,
and I'll give you stuff to do!

actually listen to us, and think about implementing things like
SongSelect differently, so that we can also add it to OpenLP.

Today changes have been added to OpenLP v2 allow Images, Presentations
and Media items to be dragged from the desktop (or any folder) into the
relevent  media manager plugin.  This will allow the selected items to
be loaded more quickly.
If a folder is selected then all the contects of the folder will be
added. When the items are added, only items withe correct file suffix
for the plugin will be loaded. So if you try to drop a presentation into
the images folder, an error message will be generated.
In addition it is possible now to drag saved services into the service
manager.  The service will be opened up and the existing service
replaced.

Hi folks,
I just wanted to drop an update about our next release, OpenLP 1.9.6
"Enflaming Elijah". We've been working hard on getting a lot of things
fixed and improved in this release, including various aspects of
internationalisation (especially around Bibles), media support, speed
and general stability. I'm really pleased with our progress thus far,
and am looking forward to the release at the end of this month.
So far we are on track to release 1.9.6 on the 26th of June, as per our
proposed milestones.
Some key features/enhancements in the upcoming version:
- Faster startup times on Windows
- Translation of everything (hopefully!), including all menu items,
buttons on wizards and dialogs, and even the web remote.
- Improved language support for Bibles

A few days ago another open source church worship project called
`ExpoSong <http://exposong.org/>`__ had to `shut
down <http://exposong.org/2014/01/08/eol-announcement/>`__. It seems to
me that they had a very small development team and were unable to
continue developing their software. ExpoSong's last release was over 2
years ago, in December 2011, and I can only presume they took a rain
check as 2014 came round and decided to officially stop the project
rather than leave it hanging.
It's very sad when an open source project has to shut down, but I can
completely understand their position. Without time or resources to
continue development, it is better to officially stop development rather
than leave it open in the dwindling hopes that someone may have the time
to continue at a later stage.
For those of you who have come from ExpoSong, I have put together a
step-by-step guide below to show you how to easily export all your songs
from ExpoSong and import them all into OpenLP. Click the **Read more**
link below if you can't see the guide.
Exporting Songs from ExpoSong and Importing Into OpenLP
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First, in ExpoSong, click on **File > Export > Whole Library**.
|Export songs from ExpoSong|
Then select where you want to save your library file to.
|Select Location|
Once you have saved your file, open your file browser and navigate to
where the file is.
|Find exported file|
Select the file and rename its extension from ".expo" to ".tar.gz"
|Change File Extension|
Now you should have a "tarball" in your directory.

Using an archive program (Windows users can use
`7-zip <http://www.7-zip.org/>`__, unzipping should be built in on Linux
and OS X), extract the contents of the "tarball".

If you enter into the extracted "pres" directory, you should see all of
your songs stored as ".xml" files.

Now go into OpenLP, select **File > Import > Songs** and when you get to
the Song Format page of the Import Wizard, select OpenLyrics. Then use
the "Add Files" button to find the files you just extracted and add them
to be imported.

Follow the rest of the prompts in the wizard to finish importing your
files.

In just over a weeks time, the OpenLP `facebook
page <http://facebook.com/openlp>`__ will be switched over to the new
Timeline view. The new view gives us the opportunity to add a cover
image to go along the top of the page, and this is where we would like
your help...
Ideally we would like to use a picture of OpenLP being used, with a full
worshipping congregation and both the operators screen and the projector
screen in view. For example a long time ago when v1 was just being born
and monitors were still the size of a small car, the photo on the right
was taken. We would like to bring it up to date..
As always, there are a few restrictions. This makes it significantly
harder, but we might accept an image close to the mark:
#. We would like to see a view of a recent v2 version, with close to the
default layout.
#. Any lyrics on the screen ideally in the Public Domain, if possible.
Although Scripture will be fine too. English would be preferable.
#. A fairly full looking congregation, who don't look like they are
bored ;)
#. The trickiest bit.. the image has to be an unstretched 851x315
resolution.

If you haven't noticed it before, let me draw your attention to the
bottom little black bar underneath the menu on the left. This is a
little counter and a link to our project page on the Ohloh website.
Ohloh is a site where open source projects can have a project page, and
users of the software can write reviews, indicate that they use the
software, and give the developers "kudo". It's kinda like a Facebook for
open source projects.
As you can see from the counter, openlp.org currently has 183 594 lines
of code, and would cost a dedicated development team $2.5 million to
write. If you use openlp.org, and you like it, would you please consider
signing up on Ohloh and at least mark that you use it. If you'd like to,
please feel free to write a review, and giving the developers kudo is
always welcome.

Hello folks,
We are happy to announce the release of our **first beta** aka *Maverick
Micah*. We have put a lot of effort into this release, squashing bugs,
adding new features, and enhancing existing features, to make this the
best release yet.
We're really excited about this release, because it marks the changeover
from version 1.2 to version 2.0. You see, from now on, we will only
really be supporting version 2. It is much less work to support version
2.0, and we feel that version 2.0 is at a point now where it can go into
mainstream use. We will still support version 1.2, but there won't be
any more bug fixing or releases of that version.
If you have not used OpenLP before, we recommend you use this new beta
release, rather than version 1.2.
A number of people have already been using the alpha versions in their
church services, and have been extremely happy with the stability of
those releases. While we can't guarantee 100% stability, we feel that
OpenLP 2.0 is stable enough to be used in your church services.
Some of the new features and improvements:
- A *First Time Wizard* which will help you to do the basic
configuration and allows you to import sample songs, Bibles and
themes.
- Additional song imports: EasiSlides, Folipresenter, SongShow Plus
- In addition we added OpenLyrics import and export support, which
allows you to easily transfer songs between different OpenLP
installations. OpenLyrics is an independent standard, built to
facilitate interoperability between various presentation
applications.
- The ability to print *Service Order Sheets* (File → Print Service
Order)
- Define your own *Display Tags* to format slides individually
- Better media support
- A reference manual (very much a work in progress though!)
Other improvements and bug fixes:
- An improved song search
- General usability improvements
- New search box for Bibles (just like the new search box for songs in
the previous release)
- A revamped web interface
- Many bugfixes
Important note: Service files created in a previous release of OpenLP
are not compatible with OpenLP 1.9.5

For the next release due at the end of the month a "First Time Wizard"
has been developed to help set up a new environment.
This will allow a user to:
- Choose which plugins they want activated
- Download Songs, Bibles and Themes from the web
- Set up the Initial display screen and the default theme.
As a number of users already have a working setup they will still need
to run this wizard.  In most cases this will allow them to add
additional bibles and themes BUT it may change their plugin settings and
if they choose to download the songs it ***will overwrite their current
songs database***.
The default option is not to download any Songs, Bibles or Themes.
This Wizard has be added to the code base.

Revision 956 commits code to change the database schema for the way song
information is stored.  This is to fix a previous oversight with
alternative titles (they work and are stored correctly now) and to add
the ability to link media files to songs.
When updating to this or any later revision **your old database will
crash OpenLP**.  To prevent this from happening:
- Move or rename your existing database (in ~/.openlp/data/songs or
~/.local/share/openlp/songs on Linux or
%APPDATA%\\openlp\\data\\songs on Windows)
- Open OpenLP to automatically create a database with the new schema
- Import your old data by selecting  File -> Import -> OpenLP v2 Songs 
from the menu in the top left of OpenLP
- Find your old database and click Open
- Your data will be imported.  **This may take a while with no visible
progress feedback.**
- When the import is finished a message box will say this is the case.
Being able to play tracks with songs is one of the few remaining version
1 features left to implement in version 2 and this change allows us to
start building that feature.

In order to make our forums a little easier to use, we've consolidated
our 5 groups and 13 forums into 2 groups and 7 forums. The
language-specific forums have remained the same, so if you speak German,
French, Spanish, or Portuguese, you can post your queries in those
forums.
The big changes come in the rest of the forums. We used to have a
multitude of sections and forums, and in order to make the forums easier
to use, and easier to figure out where the best place to post your query
is, we have slimmed it down to 3 categories:
- General Discussion
This is where you can discuss more general topics, like problems with
the web site, or where to get Bibles, and other things that don't fit
in either of the other two forums.
- Troubleshooting
If you're having general problems getting OpenLP running, this is the
place to find help. If you think you've encountered a bug, but you're
not getting an actual error, you should post in here too. Please note
that since most of the developers use Linux, most operating system
specific queries cannot necessarily be answered.
- Development
Bug reports, feature requests, offers of help, and other
development-related topics can be posted in here.
This is another change we're making in order to optimise the site,
hopefully making the site almost as easy to use as OpenLP is

In preparation for some changes that we have made in the next major
version of OpenLP we had to make a change in the last release (2.0.2) in
the way that service files are saved. With OpenLP 2.0.2 and higher, you
will still be able to read your old service files, but earlier versions
of OpenLP will not be able to open files created in later versions of
OpenLP.
For example, OpenLP 2.0.2 will be able to open services files saved in
OpenLP 2.0.1, but OpenLP 2.0.1 will not be able to open services files
saved in OpenLP 2.0.2.
Unfortunately a bug was introduced preventing services that had notes in
them from being saved. We have already fixed this and plan to make a
release (2.0.3) to address this issue in the near future. If you wish to
use notes we suggest that you do not upgrade to 2.0.2.
We thank you for your patience in this matter and apoligise for this
bug. Steps are being taken including automated testing in 2.2 to reduce
the chances of bugs like these slipping in the future.

Those who hang around here regularly will know that we plan to release
the final version of OpenLP 2.0 at the end of October. As one can
imagine, with such a momentous release we'd like to make a big noise
about it. Because OpenLP is open source, it is primarily driven by its
users, whether they are developers, or just folks that hang out in the
forums and want to help out in whatever way they can. With the upcoming
release of version 2.0, we are going to need lots of help from YOU.
Here's how you can help:
Web Site
~~~~~~~~
We are in the process of completely rethinking the web site and making
it more product-centric. We want to include some new elements in the
site that we haven't relied on in our marketing previously.
One of the things we want to display on the new site are testimonials
from users of OpenLP. If you use OpenLP, and like it, please either post
your testimonial in the forums or e-mail it to support (at) openlp.org
and we'll include it on the new site. Be genuine in your testimonial,
mentioning what you like about OpenLP and why you use it. Don't be too
shy of pointing out one or two things that currently irritate you about
OpenLP, honest testimonials give a far better reflection than purely
positive ones.
To be completely honest with you, hearing of a megachurch using OpenLP
does far more for OpenLP's reputation than a small church. We will
display all testimonials with equal status regardless of the church
size, but we'd love to have some from the bigger churches out there.
We also want to show off photographs of OpenLP in action. If you have a
high quality photograph of OpenLP in use in your church, we'd like to
use it on the site. We have a couple on our Facebook page, but we want
more and we want better ones. The minimum requirements for photographs
are 5 megapixels on a proper digital camera, not a mobile/cellular
phone. These too can be e-mailed to us at the address listed above.
Please be aware that not all testimonials and/or photographs will
necessarily be accepted. We are looking for top quality content for our
site, and if yours doesn't make the grade we won't include it. If you
really want yours included, contact us and find out why it was not
accepted, and we can work with you to bring it up to the inclusion
standard.
User Guide

We're still looking for people to write and/or translate the user guide.
It is already laid out, it just needs content. You don't need to be a
developer to write it, we will help you get set up. The user guide uses
a formatting system called reStructuredText, in a similar vein to
Markdown or wiki formatting.

and running in no time at all.
Fixing Bugs
~~~~~~~~~~~

Of course we're still fixing bugs in OpenLP. If you come across any,
please make sure to e-mail a full bug report to bugs (at) openlp.org.
If you encounter the error window, you ***MUST*** either use the
**E-mail** button to e-mail us directly, or use the **Save** button to
save the report to a file, and then send us that file. If you just send
us an e-mail saying that an error occurred, we can't help you, or figure
out what the bug is. The information in that error window is vital.
If you try to do something and it doesn't work, but it doesn't show the
error window, please make sure you can reproduce the bug (can you do it
again and again?) and list in as much detail as possible the steps you
took to reproduce it. Also include which version of OpenLP, which
operating system and its version, your distro and your desktop
environment if you're using Linux, your graphics card, and any other
information you think is important. For example:
Action Performed: I tried to add a new theme.
Expected Result: A new theme listed in the theme manager.
Actual Result: After running through the Theme Wizard successfully,
my new theme did not appear in the theme manager. It did appear
after restarting OpenLP though.
Steps to Reproduce:
#. Click on the New Theme button in the Theme Manager.
#. Run through the creation process, selecting any combination -
this bug affects all of them.
#. At the end of the process, click the finish button.
#. Notice that the new theme is not visible in the Theme Mananger.
#. Restart OpenLP and see the new theme.
Computer Details: Kubuntu Linux 12.10 (beta), LibreOffice 3.6,
nVidia GeForce 5600, VLC 2.03
Before you submit a bug report, please search through our existing bug
reports and make sure you're not reporting one that already exists.
Additionally, we need to be able to reproduce your bug before we'll add
it to that list, so your bug may not show up for a day or two. Relax, as
long as you sent it to bugs (at) openlp.org, we have it and are looking
into it.

I've been formulating a professional e-mail to some of the Christian
bookstore chains here in South Africa, and I decided to make it
available to the openlp.org community. This letter basically just talks
about what openlp.org is, what open source software is, and why we want
them to distribute it.
I've created a forum topic with the letter in it, and I encourage you to
look at the letter, translate it into your language, and decide amongst
yourselves who should be the "openlp.org representative" for your
country. Just remember to keep it sounding professional.
Derek and I have been looking at how much it will cost to print labels
for CDs and give those CDs away. We came to roughly 1 US dollar per CD.
This isn't a lot, and you're welcome to investigate doing this yourself.
I'll post CD labels and other packaging and promotional things later, so
that you can print out and use these things. So if your letter is
successful, you'll be able to download official openlp.org labels and
print them out, and give the bookstores professional looking CDs.
But don't stop there. Why not print out more labels and CDs and hand
them out to folks from other Churches that you might know, so that they
can also benefit from open source software?

Well, it's 2 days before the release of openlp.org 1.0, and I am proud
to say that we have almost all the issues resolved. It was a bit
touch-and-go earlier, with a few of the bugs being potential
show-stoppers, and with solutions seeming to be unavailable, but
fortunately we have managed to either fix them or work around them.
The one thing that unfortunately is NOT complete is the user guide,
otherwise known as the documentation. We'll be releasing with what we
have so far, and after the release, we'll work on the documentation, and
release 1.0.1 with the complete documentation. There is enough in the
documentation for the user to be able to get to know how to use
openlp.org, so it's not a big deal.
For those who don't know, Hannah and I have also been moving these last
two weeks, so things have been really hectic. I'm really grateful to
Derek and Jonathan Corwin for stepping in and taking up any extra slack
when I've not been able to get work done on openlp.org.
Derek and I have also been investigating getting CDs printed. This is a
slightly expensive affair, as you no doubt can imagine, but if there is
enough interest, we'd like to pursue that option. I'm thinking of doing
something similar to Ubuntu's Shipit, except that we don't have the
millions that Mark Shuttleworth has, so we'd be asking you to pay for CD
production and shipping costs. Of course, buying in bulk reduces the
cost of the CDs, and in a minor way, the cost of the shipping too.
And lastly, don't forget to subscribe to the openlp.org newsletter! This
is where we'll announce new releases and important events. Don't worry,
we won't spam you, and you won't get lots of mail.

This evening I merged the bugfixes from openlp.org 1.0.1 into the main
code. My next move will be to clean up the conflicts that arose in the
merge (the version control software can't always do a perfect merge, so
it lets me "resolve" some of those "conflicts"). Once I've done that,
I'll be continuing with the code cleanup that is necessary to implement
some of the more advanced things.
The next step, after the cleanup, will be to rewrite the control
component, which will allow a large number of usability improvements
(like pressing the down key to go to the next slide!). Once I've done
that, I'll start migrating the songs to the new database format
necessary to add more features requested (like verse ordering). These
first 3 things are the biggest changes, and once they're done, we will
most probably start releasing development versions of openlp.org 1.1
(which will become 1.2).
I'm looking forward to a number of the improvements being introduced,
and I hope you'll bear with me while they are being worked on. Thanks to
all the folks who have posted feature requests, they have been noted,
and will be sorted into various categories and decided upon once I've
finished the code cleanup.
If you're keen to help developing this next version of openlp.org,
please drop me an e-mail. To those folks who have already sent me
e-mails about the components, please just drop me yet another mail - my
e-mail is in a bit of a state of flux at the moment, and I can't access

Videos are a great way to enhance the worship experience. Sermon
illustrations, home grown videos for announcements before or after a
service, showing videos to help set a “mood” of worship before a service
starts or through a multitude of other creative ways, videos can be
effective tools for worship. OpenLP has the ability to play videos as
part of the service using the
`Media <http://manual.openlp.org/mediamanager.html#media>`__ tab. You
simply add your video, or audio to OpenLP then use it as you do a song
or Bible verses in your service. Easy.
If this works for you, dont read any further, but what if you set up
OpenLP and videos do not perform correctly? Actually, if videos work for
you keep on reading anyway you might still need this someday. We are
going to walk through a sure fire way of getting videos working in
OpenLP without a lot of work.
First, lets look at how OpenLP plays videos. OpenLP uses resources
already installed on your computer to play videos. That is enough
detail, if you want to do an in-depth look at audio and video codecs by
all means please do but just understand in theory if your computer will
play a file, OpenLP “should” play this file also. Theories are great,
but as with many this theory fails many times in practice. In the past
the solution was to install codec packs and do a variety of other rather
hackish things with hopes that videos would work. This is no longer the
case, thanks to another open source project
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__ paired with OpenLP 2.0.
If you have not heard of
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__\ lets just put it this
way it is the premier media player, regardless of operating system. If
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__\ wont play your file,
stop, nothing will play your file. That may not be entirely the case,
but chances are if
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__\ wont play it nothing
will. So what does this have to do with OpenLP you ask? Remember OpenLP
uses resources on your computer to play videos and with
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__ installed OpenLP can
use this most awesome media player to take care of all of your media
problems.
The first step is to download
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__ from
`HERE <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__. If you are running a
Linux distro it should be available using your distros package manager.
You will need version 2.0.3 or above to work correctly. Once you have
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__ installed we are just
about finished.
Now we need to tell OpenLP to use
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__ to play all media.
Dont worry you wont regret this and if you do you can always change
this setting back. Go to Settings, then click on Configure OpenLP. You
should now be greeted by a window that looks similar to this:

Click on Media on the left hand panel to enter the media settings. You
should see a list of available media players. Click on the check box to
enable `VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__. In the player
order box, click on VLC and use the up arrow to promote it to the top of
the list. You can also disable all the other media players if you wish.
If you check the “Allow media player to be overridden” check box you can
change the player on the fly from the
`Media <http://manual.openlp.org/mediamanager.html#media>`__ tab in the
`Media
Manager <http://manual.openlp.org/glossary.html#g-media-manager>`__.
This is a good option for some users, but really if you are using VLC
you shouldnt need to do this.
|Media Configuration|
That is it, you should now be able to play about any video you will ever
get your hands on.
 
**Note:** If you install
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__ while OpenLP is running
you will need to restart OpenLP after installing
`VLC <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html>`__.

Looking back over the past year, OpenLP has had quite an eventful year.
In 2011 we had the last two releases of openlp.org 1.2.x, had five
releases of OpenLP 2.0 (1.9.x), we moved from alpha releases to beta
releases, and we end-of-life'd openlp.org 1.x. Not only that, OpenLP
even has an Android app!
Both as an application, and as a project, OpenLP has gone from strength
to strength during 2011. Since the first beta release (version 1.9.5) we
have had over 80,000 downloads, and the new manual has seen steady
improvement since it was first put together. There have been a number of
favourable reviews of OpenLP, and we've seen people talking about OpenLP
more on the Internet this year. The OpenLP site has also seen almost
150,000 visitors this year.
This coming year promises to be even bigger and better. While we don't
have a fixed release date for OpenLP 2.0, the general feeling is that it
will likely be toward the end of 2012. This means that lots of bug
fixing lies ahead of us, we'd like to get things like translations and
the manual complete, and look at revamping the web site for the final
release too.
Often we make New Years resolutions but in 2 Corinthians 13:5, Paul
tells us:
Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test
yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus
Christ is in you? - unless indeed you fail to meet the test!"
2 Corinthians 13:5, ESV
A careful self-evaluation is often insightful and motivating, especially
for Christians working on their New Years resolutions. As we kick off
the new year, take time to examine you faith and confirm your commitment
to Christ, reflecting on what He has done for you this past year, and
thinking of what you can do in the coming year to strengthen your faith
and deepen your relationship with Him.
In short, the OpenLP team wishes you a blessed and fruitful new year.

| Before I kick off the main gist of this post, I'd just like to
announce that OpenLP 2.0.3 has finally made it to our `Ubuntu
PPA <http://launchpad.net/~openlp-core/+archive/release>`__.
| Unfortunately I was having computer hardware issues and I wasn't able
to get the build process set up until a few days ago. I've remedied this
problem by setting up the build process on our Continuous Integration
server such that anyone can build packages for the PPA by simply
clicking a button.
| As per the title of this post, we have set up a

Things have been rather quiet recently on the OpenLP front, and we
wanted to give you an update about the current state of development. We
will be releasing another bug fix version of the 2.0 release in the near
future (most of us are just rather occupied with real life), and will
continue with these bugfix versions until either 2.2 is released, or
there are no more bugs (yeah right!). Of course we've been putting most
of our effort behind continuing the development of OpenLP, implementing
more features and doing a lot of behind-the-scenes work to ensure OpenLP
remains a stable product.
|Image Groups|
Some nice features have been added recently:
- The "Blank to" buttons in the live controller expand into 3 separate
buttons if there is enough space (like in version 1.2.x)
- You can create "image groups"
- The remote plugin can now use HTTPS
- The remote plugin can now also be password protected
|SSL and Password|
Some other internal improvements:
- Save services without media files
- Media players (such as Phonon and VLC) are now in OpenLP core,
instead of the media plugin
- Various bugs in the media players have been fixed
- Preparing to move our code from Python 2 to Python 3 numerous
performance improvements have been added to the code
- Rewritten the Settings code
- Various other internal rewrites and cleanups
We also have some new Czech Bibles available for download in the First
Time Wizard.
**NOTE:** The current development version is not stable. Do not use it
at church, it will crash :)
We are also happy to see that the community is growing, with more people
helping out on the forums. We are always grateful for every helping
hand.

Are you eager to help out with OpenLP but aren't a developer?
We need folks to help write the manual for OpenLP 2.0. You don't need to
be a developer, but a good working knowledge of how to do things like
set up dual monitors is essential. Experience with markup systems like
BBcode, Markdown or even HTML is an advantage, but not necessary.
So what does it entail?
Basically, you'll be writing up documentation in something called
reStructuredText, which is plain text with a little bit of markup. It
might sound pretty intimidating, but it isn't that complicated. You will
also need to work a little with Bazaar, the version control system we
use, but that's not that complicated either. And don't worry, we will
help you every step along the way.

Many thanks once again go to Derek for his part of the development of
openlp.org 1.0. I don't think we'd be where we are now without him.
Just insofar as the next version of openlp.org, we follow the Linux
kernel's versioning system, with stable releases being even numbers, and
development releases being odd numbers. So that means that the next
stable version of openlp.org will be 1.2. All new features will be in
the development version, version 1.1, while we maintain the 1.0 branch,
just bringing out bug fixes for any bugs that may still arise.
Some of the first jobs we will be doing in version 1.1 will be a major
code cleanup. This means that internally we will be tidying up the
openlp.org code, which often results in faster code, and making
openlp.org more flexible internally. We also will be moving to SQLite 3.
Currently our song and bible databases are all in SQLite 2.8 format, and
we want to upgrade to make use of the updated features in version 3.
We will obviously also bring in a number of the features that have been
requested so far. We have a nice long list of features, and we would
like to implement as many of those as is possible. Once again, however,
we will have to make a call on some features, on whether or not they
make sense to be included, and on how long they will take to implement
versus getting a product out.
Hope this helps to clear up what direction we are headed in for the
short run.

4. It's looking great! I have been very busy outside of programming,
just being back from tour in the US with my band Glass Darkly. We played
14 times over 14 days, and had a great time with it all!

No, we're not releasing OpenLP 2.0, my wife and I are expecting a baby.
From time to time in the past I have blogged things of a more personal
nature, which I know some of the OpenLP community have welcomed, and I
figured that most of the community would like to hear this bit of news.
My wife is booked for a caesarean section on Wednesday, 29th July. This
is our first child, and we're both excited, but also daunted at the
responsibility we have been given to take care of this baby. We would
most certainly appreciate your prayers for the operation and for the
adjustments we have to make and for the additional financial
consequences of a child.
Of course, having a new born baby is unfortunately also going to impact
the amount of work I can do on OpenLP, but I'm hoping that it won't be
taking away too much of my time.

Hi guys,
Just a quick update - I'm still around. Sort of.. Raoul is now handling
the main running of openlp.org. I have got married and started a new job
with an open source consultancy and things have been rather hectic.
However, I do still hope that in the future I can have a hand in the
direction and development of openlp.org, and wanted to thank everyone
for taking us over 27000 downloads of openlp.org in our life time.
I would love to continue hearing from you on what direction you would
like openlp.org to take, and what new features you would like. A Linux
version is still in the pipeline, as are a number of other developments
- keep your eyes peeled!

As many folks know, the CCLI SongSelect importer in openlp.org has been
disabled due to problems with the service. What many people don't know
is that all the applications out there that interface with SongSelect
are actually pretending to be web browsers, and are painstakingly
pulling the information out of the SongSelect web pages.
The reason openlp.org (and many other presentation applications) stopped
working with SongSelect was because CCLI was busy moving their systems
from a ColdFusion-based setup to an ASP.NET-based setup (to be honest,
I'm not sure if that's an improvement). I took a look at SongSelect
again today, and it seems like they have finished the conversion and are
now in full swing with the ASP.NET system.
This is both good news and bad news for us. The good news is that it
means that we can integrate with SongSelect again. The bad news is that
ASP.NET is a terrible system (for reasons I won't go into right now) and
it's gonna take a very long time to get the SongSelect integration
working again.
We're going to look into getting it going for release with openlp.org
1.2, but unfortunately we can't make any promises.
